Astrologers often scare people by indicating dire consequences of having Rahu Ketu debilitation in the horoscope. But, one need not worry at all.
What are Rahu & Ketu?
Rahuand Ketuare not planets that have a physical form. They are only mathematical points. In Astrology, we call them “Chaya Grahas“. The orbit of Moon around the Earth cuts across Ecliptic (Sun’s path as observed from the Earth) at two points- Rahu and Ketu. In Astrophysics, these two points have a crucial mathematical significance.
In Mythology, the story goes that after Samudra Manthan, while Lord Vishnu disguised as Mohini was distributing the nectar, one of the Asura named Swarbhanu disguised as Deva and stood between Sun and Moon. Just as he drank the nectar and before he could swallow it, the Sun and Moon identified Swarbhanu. Lord Vishnu, through the Sudarshan Chakra, cut the throat of Swarbhanu. After that, Lord Brahma attached the head of Swarbhanu with a snake’s body and named it Rahu. Similarly, he connected the body of Swarbhanu with a snake’s head and called it Ketu. Both Nodes- Rahu and Ketu cause eclipses to Sun and Moon, and as per mythology, it is because they were responsible for their creation.
What does Classics say about Rahu Ketu debilitation:
In simple words, a planet is very effective and potent if it is in its own house, friend’s house, exaltation or mool trikona while it is bereft of power and influence if it is in enemy’s house and debilitation.
Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra (BPHS), the Bible of Astrology by Maharshi Parasara never mentions about Rahu Ketu debilitation, exaltation or even Mool Trikona. In Chapter-3, Verses 49 & 50 of the Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra, Maharshi Parasara says exaltation and debilitation signs of the seven planets. But it is silent on RahuKetudebilitation. Renowned thinker Shri Kalyan Verma in his monumental work Saravali(Ch. 3) talks in detail about Mooltrikona, Swakshetra (own house), exaltation, debilitation, deep exaltation and debilitation points etc. but it also doesn’t talk of Rahu Ketu debilitation and exaltation.
As stated above, the Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra doesn’t speak about exaltation and debilitation of Rahu and Ketu. Several other classical texts have given a varied interpretation of exaltation and debilitation of Rahu and Ketu. Sarvartha Chintamani and Bhavartha Ratnakara, both highly regarded classics, say that Rahu is exalted in Taurus and Ketu is exalted in Scorpio. Bhavartha Ratnakara also assigns Mithun (Gemini) and Kark (Cancer) as mooltrikona of Rahu and Dhanu (Saggitarius) and Makar (Capricorn) as mooltrikona of Ketu. Further, Veemesaram, a Tamil work states that Rahu Ketu is exalted in Vrischik (Scorpio) and debilitated in Vrishabh (Taurus). Jatakalankaram says that Ketu is exalted in Mithun (Gemini) and is in fall in Dhanu (Saggitarius).
Does Rahu Ketu debilitation matters?
NO. It doesn’t matter. For instance, when Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra doesn’t mention about it, and other classical texts give a varied opinion, we may not bother about it. Like in case of any different planet, the results provided by Rahu and Ketu have to be interpreted in conjunction with several other factors such as the dashas, Rasi and Planetary aspects, the amsa rulers etc. Even if Rahu is in Scorpio or Ketu is in Taurus in someone’s chart, one should not worry about it. It could be that the Lord of the houses having Rahu and Ketu in such cases could be in Kendra or Trine or Rahu, and Ketu themselves are in good amsa.
In conclusion, Rahu and Ketu are auspicious nodes, and like any other planet, please do worship these nodes for spiritual upliftment. Also, irrespective of their placement in the horoscope, the power of chanting Rahu Suktam and Ketu Suktam is an enchanting experience in itself. And what more, it takes only 10 seconds. Yes, only 10 seconds and the syllables of the mantra vibrates inside for long. Please do experience it first hand and have a listen:
