Relevance of Bhagavad Gita in times of COVID-19

The relevance of Bhagavad Gita in the times of COVID-19 is increasing. Without a vaccine, only our immunity can save us & the Gita Gyana has a lot to offer.

The relevance of Bhagavad Gita in the times of COVID-19 has never been so significant before. The Bhagavad Gita mentions meditation, sleep, diet, and stress management which are powerful COVID immunity boosters. A specially designed Corona food chart or a COVID diet plan or trying to adhere to specific COVID sleep patterns alone may not guarantee an increase in immunity. However, the practical application of  Bhagavad Gita in daily life provides hope to humanity during the unprecedented crisis brought by the COVID 19 pandemic.

Spirituality and COVID-19

As we have discussed in the previous article – When will Coronavirus end? the fight against the coronavirus does not appear to be ending so soon. Till the Rahu-Ketu axis leaves Taurus-Scorpio and enters Aries-Libra, the World would not be able to overpower the virus. Thus, we need to remain cautious, follow all guidelines of the Government issued from time to time, and most importantly increase our immunity through lifestyle changes.

With a sharp rise in COVID cases, spirituality during the COVID crisis has seen a renewed focus. The revered Bhagavad Gita and spiritual knowledge that it contains, have benefitted the World since time immemorial. During the current times, the Gita Gyana has become much more relevant. Any person, irrespective of the faith, religion, or belief she or he has, can benefit from the teachings of Gita about Karma Yoga, Gyana Yoga, and Dhyana Yoga to attain self-realization.

Immunity Boosters in the Bhagavad Gita:

When considered in entirety, Bhagavad Gita is all about managing stress emanating from the dilemmas and distresses of everyday material existence. Stress management is one of the important factors in boosting immunity. There is a direct correlation between the teachings of the Bhagwad Gita and stress management. As we delve deep into the Gita, we find that there are specific slokas that talk about meditation, sleep, diet, and the primordial sound OM.

Meditation:

Meditation has been discussed in detail in the Bhagavad Gita. A complete chapter is dedicated to the Dhyana Yoga. How to meditate according to the Bhagavad Gita is prescribed in Chapter-5, Karma-Yoga, Sloka 27-28 where the Lord says:-

Shutting out all external sense objects, keeping the eyes and vision concentrated between the two eyebrows, suspending the inward and outward breaths within the nostrils, and thus controlling the mind, senses, and intelligence, the transcendentalist aiming at liberation becomes free from desire, fear, and anger. One who is always in this state is certainly liberated.¹

Meditation and immunity seem to have a causative relationship. In a scientific study, findings of research conducted on Mindfulness Meditation suggest possible effects of mindfulness meditation on specific markers of inflammation, cell-mediated immunity, and biological aging.  Thus, the regular practice of meditation could help us in dealing with fear and anxiety due to coronavirus.

Optimum Eating and Sleeping:

Apart from meditation, another powerful immunity booster is to eat better and sleep better. Lockdowns have forced us to stay more and more indoors. As such, it is likely that our eating and sleeping patterns get disturbed. Across the World, people are experiencing COVID sleep disorders. Eating and sleeping more than required can significantly decrease the capacity of the body to handle stress. The Bhagavad Gita prescribes moderation in eating and sleeping. In Chapter-6, Dhyana-Yoga, Sloka 16, the Lord says:

नात्यश्र्नतस्तु योगोsस्ति न चैकान्तमनश्नत: ।

न चातिस्वप्नशीलस्य जाग्रतो नैव चार्जुन ।।१६।।

There is no possibility of one’s becoming a yogi, O Arjuna, if one eats too much or eats too little, sleeps too much or does not sleep enough.²

Although most of us would not aim to become a yogi, it is clearly indicated in the sloka that one needs to have optimum sleep and diet intake in everyday life.

Having Knowledge of the Absolute:

With regular meditation practice, optimum diet, and the required sleep schedule in place, we would be well on our path to boost immunity. Last but not the least, to bind all these elements together, we need to traverse into the spiritual realm and have the knowledge of the absolute.

In Chapter-7, Sloka-8, Lord Krishna says:-

रसोsहमप्सु कौन्तेय प्रभास्मि शशिसूर्ययो: ।

प्रणव: सर्ववेदेषु शब्द: खे पौरुषं नृषु ।।८।।

O son of Kunti, I am the taste of water, the light of the Sun and the Moon, the syllable OM in the Vedic mantras; I am the sound in ether and ability in a man.³

The syllable OM is the Lord Himself. Every other sound in the Universe originates from OM. For a decisive victory over the coronavirus, management of COVID and spiritual care needs to go hand in hand. Prayers remain the most potent medium of COVID 19 spiritual reflection. It doesn’t matter whether we pray to Krishna or Siva or Rama or Kali or any form of Devi Devata as an incarnation of the almighty. In other words, all forms of GOD are divine. The only requirement is to have complete faith in mother nature and its spiritual forms.

The Krishna Beej Mantra:

Let’s invoke the divine sound of OM along with the Krishna Beej Mantra and surrender to the Lord for twenty-seven seconds and pray to almighty to bless us all with good immunity to fight against the Coronavirus:-

ऊँ, श्री कृष्ण शरणम् मम: ।। Om, Sri Krishna Sharanam Mamah.

Om Tat Sat

Anish Prasad
